Warangal: Massive campaign to use clay Ganesh idols

923 clay idols were distributed free of cost to locals.

Warangal: Promoting the use of clay Ganesh idols, NGOs distributed eco-friendly Ganesh idols free of cost to the citizens. In Mahbubabad, the students of Pragathi High School with help from voluntary orgnisations like Disha, a social service organisation, Vasavi club and Kamadhenu Goshala distributed clay Ganesh idols door-to-door.

923 clay idols were distributed free of cost to the local people by students with slogans to use only clay idols and avoid PoP idols. For the first time, the students made beautiful idols of different shapes and colours using their hands to give shape rather than press moulds.

Disha social service organisation president V. Gurunadha Rao said that as part of their campaign, they have targeted the schoolchildren to make them the torch bearers of the society. “The children made these Ganesh idols from clay with devotion, passion and creativity. They are well aware of the ill effects of PoP on the environment and took a pledge not to use PoP idols in the future” he said.

In Hanamkonda, Sulakshya Seva Samithi distributed clay idols to the residents of Srinagar Colony (South) here on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, founder-president of the Samithi, Santhosh Manduva, said that they are doing this programme since the past three years as part of their objective of protecting the environment. “We want to create awareness among the citizens to install Ganesh idols made of clay which is eco-friendly rather than idols made of PoP which is extremely harmful to the environment,” he added.

Chief Guest of the event, noted litterateur, Gannamraju Girijamanohar Babu, called upon the people to install idols made of clay both at homes and pandals. “I appreciate Sulakshya Seva Samithi for taking up such activities which are very much the need of the hour. We need to keep the spirit of this festival intact but we should not damage the nature’s eco system by erecting idols made of PoP” he said. He exhorted the youth to carry forward our rich heritage and culture. Members of the Samithi Santhosh Manduva, Revanth Mandala, Prasad, Thirumal, colony residents Chandraprakash, Veeraiah, Clay idol maker Rajender, colony development society representatives, Gan-esh Utsava committee members were present.
