18,000 shifted to relief camps in Andhra Pradesh

Officials continued with the second warning status in view of the unpredictability of the river.

KAKINADA: Flood waters in the Godavari began receding on Sunday even as about 75,000 people in East and West Godavari districts in Andhra Pradesh were affected and about 18,000 were shifted to relief camps.

Officials discharged 13,43,836 cusecs of water into sea by opening 175 gates at Dowalaiswaram by 12 pm, and issued the second warning. The floodwater began receding to 11.70 lakhs cusecs by 4 pm. Officials continued with the second warning status in view of the unpredictability of the river.

According to an official release, 280 villages in 24 mandals of the Godavari districts have been affected. The government has issued orders for distribution of essential commodities in the flood affected villages. The government has deployed 120 NDRF personnel. 90 of them for East Godavari district.

Sources said 17,632 persons were shifted to 32 relief camps in East Godavari and 47 medical camps were organised in West Godavari. Officials distributed 35,264 food packets.
