Kakinada: Balissetty Rambai pressed panic button, saved many

Had it not been for her, many more victims may have lost their vision.

Kakinada: Sixty-year-old Balissetty Rambai, who had undergone an eye surgery six years ago, suspected that there was something wrong with the surgeries conducted at the Lions Club Hospital and alerted others. Had it not been for her, many more victims may have lost their vision.

Rambai is also one of the victims of the Lions Club Hospital incident. A cataract surgery was performed on her, after which she began to feel an itchy sensation and eventually lost her vision. “An eye surgery was performed on me six years ago in Rajahmundry. After that surgery, I could see everything clearly. But on April 12, after the surgery on my left eye, I could not see anything.

“I began suffering from pain and itching. With a suspicion that something was wrong, I contacted the hospital. The hospital staff referred me to another hospital, where it was declared that I had lost my vision,” says Rambai. D. Peddiraju, who has partially lost his vision, says that he decided to approach the Lions Club Hospital after hearing Rambai’s story and experiencing similar pains. After going through a couple of different hospitals, the victims were finally referred to the L.V. Prasad Eye Institute at Visakhapatnam.

“The doctors at the L.V. Prasad Eye Hospital doctors conducted all the medical tests including ECGs, blood tests, and tests for sugar and blood pressure. They declared that I had lost vision in one eye, and they removed my eyeball for the safety of the other eye,” says Kuppala Krupa Rao, a victim of the incident.
