1909 does little to curb unwanted calls

TRAI officials claim calling the same number or individual telecom operators will fix the issue.

Hyderabad: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) Do not Disturb (DND) service using the number 1909 to prevent unwanted messages and unsolicited commercial communication has itself been accused of disturbing users.

Customers have reportedly been suffering from the intrusion of unwanted messages day in and day out on the importance of enrolling for the DND service.

Telangana and Andhra Pradesh British deputy high commissioner Andrew Fleming took to Twitter to post, “Actually, nuisance calls don't bother me nearly as much in India as these nuisance texts I receive once or twice a day. So far 1909 has failed to stop them (sic)!”

Fleming also shared screenshots of messages from 1909, with other users adding that they, too, have been receiving such messages.

When contacted, TRAI officials claim calling the same number or individual telecom operators will fix the issue.

“TRAI or National Do Not Call Registry don't take complaints directly and it is your service provider who will handle these complaints,” a TRAI official said.

However, a user pointed that despite calling customer care, the messages did not stop completely, though their frequency had decreased.
