13th Kerala Assembly session to be stormy

This time Mr Chandy will present his budget on February 12.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The last and 16th Assembly session of the current United Democratic Front government will start on Friday with Governor P. Sathasivam’s address.

The 14-day budget session of the 13th Kerala Assembly is expected to be stormy with the Opposition announcing an Assembly march on the first day demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and the ministers tainted in the solar and bar scams.

The Left Democratic Front has already warned the government of stiff opposition in the coming days. The government is expected to challenge the solar and bar allegations raised in the court and by bar owner Biju Ramesh.

Last year, the Opposition had tried to prevent the then finance minister K. M. Mani from presenting his 13th budget. This time Mr Chandy will present his budget on February 12.

“On Friday, we will organise protests across the state because a tainted CM will be presenting the budget. Our demand is that Chandy as well as his three tainted ministers should step down,” said Mr Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, CPM state secretary.

On Wednesday, the Opposition had called on Mr Sathasivam and requested him not to read the customary Governor's address on the first day of the session as the Chandy government was “neck deep” in the solar and bar scams. He, however, declined their demand.

Earlier, Mr Chandy had presented his budgets from 1991-94 and it is after 22 years that he will be doing it again.
