Confident DMK urges Election Commission to hold local body polls

With new working chief, party eyes to drag Sasikala to people's court.

CHENNAI: In an obvious effort to draw the new AIADMK general secretary to people’s court, the DMK on Wednesday urged the State Election Commission to hold the local body elections soon after rectifying the anomalies in reservation of civic body posts. The State Election Commission, under the state government, did not follow the procedure and the rotation in reservation for the oppressed communities paving way for the postponement by the court, it said. The EC should hold the local body elections after rectifying the anomalies and revising the electoral rolls, the resolution said.

The party cited the continuing suicides of farmers and demanded the waiver of crop loans and declaration of the state as drought hit. The DMK also passed resolutions to condole the death of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, former Cuban president Fidel Castro, former DMK minister Ko.Si. Mani and journalist Cho. Ramaswamy. Another resolution said the people of Tamil Nadu are treating cows in an affectionate manner, but those who did not understand jallikattu had taken a stand against it, leading to stopping the traditional and ancient sport. It urged the Centre to make the necessary amendments and allow jallikattu to be held during the Tamil month of Thai this year. Describing the new education policy proposed by the Centre as an effort to impose Sanskrit, besides imposing communal ideas in the minds of students, the party said.

The efforts to revive Sanskrit which has become extinct several centuries ago is an attempt to ruin the educational skills of Indian students, it asserted. The centre should abandon its bid to interfere in state's rights and finish the educational plans of all the states, the resolution stressed. The party also passed a resolution to cancel Neet and allow the states to continue the admission to professional courses followed earlier. The DMK opposed the move to private Salem Steel Plant and demanded that the plan be dropped. Another resolution demanded the setting up Lok Pal and Lokayuktha to punish the corrupt.
