Latur: In queue for water, woman dies from intense heat

Kevalbai Kamble had been standing in the queue for over 2 hours to get water from a borewell in Atola village.

Latur, Maharashtra: A woman on Tuesday died after standing for hours in a queue to get water in Maharashtra’s drought-hit Latur, police said.

Kevalbai Kamble, 45, had been standing in the queue for over two hours to get water from a borewell in Atola village in Chakur tehsil when she collapsed due to the intense heat. She was rushed to the government hospital at Latur but was declared dead on admission.

In similar circumstances, an 11-year-old boy had died while getting water for his family from a village well in Beed district last week. Another 12-year-old girl Yogita had died after making five trips to a water pump near her home in the district. She had been unwell for days with dysentery but was forced to go out in 42 degrees Celsius heat to get water from an almost dry hand-pump.
