Hyderabad: Vacant urology posts worry doctors

He said Dr Prasad had performed 516 renal tra-nsplants.

Hyderabad: There is a severe shortage of senior doctors in the urology department at Osmania General Hospital. The department will be face a further crisis after the reti-rement of one of the two professors. With no recr-uitment having been done in the recent past, the shortage of senior doctors will impact practising junior doctors and teaching in medical colleges.

The Telangana Junior Doctors Joint Action Committee (JAC) has written to the state health secretary, requesting that him to extend the service of the professor, Dr D.V.S.R.K. Prasad, head of department of urology at OGH, who will retire in February.

There are only two urology professors in the state, one at Gandhi Hospital and the other at OGH, said Dr P.S. Vijay-ender Goud, chairman of the Telangana Junior Doctors JAC. “To conduct exams, there should be two internals who are professors. After Dr Prasad retires, students and patients will be affected. There is a possibility of cancellation of MCH Urology seats.”

He said Dr Prasad had performed 516 renal tra-nsplants. “In the absence of top doctors, patient care will be affected.”

The doctors JAC reque-sted the government to extend the services of Dr Prasad by three years or until adequate teaching staff is available to retain the MCH urology seats and continue patient services.
