Kerala government steps to pay salaries in time

Help desks have been set up in the treasury directorate and district treasuries for the purpose.

Thiruvananthapuram: The government has taken steps to disburse salaries to its employees in time following reports of delay in the payment, Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac said on Friday.

Help desks have been set up in the treasury directorate and district treasuries for the purpose. The desks will be manned by treasury officers as well as those who dealt with salary distribution software, SPARK. They will redress the grievances of the employees, he said.

The treasuries worked till 9 p.m. to pass all the bills received on Thursday itself.

The treasury director will take steps to pay salaries within the stipulated time. The bills that reached the treasuries will be passed that day itself, Mr Isaac said.

Only some 2,500 employees, out of a total of 5.75 lakh, except teachers, received their salaries on Thursday. Normally, one lakh employees get the salary on the first of every month.

The delay resulted from the confusion caused by the government order on the ‘Salary Challenge’ and the verdicts passed by the High Court and Supreme Court against it.

The government order had mandated that employees not interested in contributing one-month’s salary to the chief minister’s distress relief fund should give a written declaration. The Kerala High Court had rejected this order and the Supreme Court had dismissed the government’s special leave petition against it.
