Terror attack at Army camp in Baramulla, one BSF jawan killed

The attack comes four days after the Indian army carried out surgical strikes in PoK.

Baramulla: Two terrorists and a BSF jawan were killed after an army camp located on the outskirts of Baramulla town was attacked on Sunday night, three days after the Indian Special Forces smashed seven terror launchpads during a surgical strike across the Line of Control (LoC).

Three jawans were also injured in the attack, reports said. Seven terrorists lobbed grenades and fired indiscriminately at the 46 Rashtriya Rifles Headquarters in the attack that began at 10.23 pm, sources said.

The spokesman for Srinagar-based XV Corps, Col Rajesh Kalia, said that terrorists fired at the army camp at Jabanzpora in Baramulla and the firing was still on.

A local journalist, Khursheed Aalam who lives less than half-a-kilometre from the spot, said over the phone that the attack began with heavy firing. “Now after half-an-hour of the apparent initial attack and retaliatory action, intermittent firing is going on,” he said. The camp, which spreads across a vast area, has been attacked either from across the river or from behind Janbazpora locality along the Baramulla-Handwara road, he said.

A local resident said that after initial burst of gunfire and what appeared to be two grenade blasts, occasional firing was going inside the camp. Also, gunfire could be heard from the nearby Border Security Force camp.

The attack comes following intelligence inputs about possible terrorist attacks on security installations in Jammu and Kashmir after the Indian army carried out surgical strikes on September 29. Sunday's strike comes exactly a fortnight after terrorists struck at the army brigade headquarters at Uri, 102 km from Srinagar, killing 19 soldiers.
