Among the new IITs, the one at Hyderabad is the most preferred choice.

Hyderabad: Of the top-500 JEE rankers, 164 opted for IIT Bombay while 131 chose IIT Delhi. IIT Kanpur with 56 students, IIT Kharagpur (51), IIT Madras (48) and IIT Roorkee (37) accounted for the rest in the top-500.

Among the new IITs, the one at Hyderabad is the most preferred choice. Nineteen students from top-1,000 opted to study in IIT-Hyderabad. The number of operational IITs has risen to 20 now from the seven in 2007.

Since 2008, 11 new IITs have started operating in Indore, Mandi, Ropar, Patna, Jodhpur, Hyderabad, Gandhinagar, Bhubaneswar, Varanasi, Palakkad and Tirupati.

Of the new ones, Gandhinagar, Jodhpur and Ropar had a student each from among the top 1,000 for the first time.

Founder Rakesh Dubbudu of the website Factly, who collated the data said that the new IITs are losing out as teething troubles such as poor infrastructure, shortage of faculty and placement woes still persist.

Students who did well in the JEE but failed to get the course of their choice at the older IITs were opting for IIITs over the newer IIT.
