Bengaluru: 50 per cent kids dump govt schools for pvt

In all, 11,36,625 students joined the first standard in the last academic year.

Bengaluru: Exposing the pathetic condition of government-run schools in the state, nearly half of all students who joined the first standard in 2015-16 have opted out and joined private-run English medium schools, which constitute only 24% of all the schools across the state.

The trend is common for both rural and urban areas, revealing that parents prefer English-medium schools which offer better career prospects for their children, stated the District Information System for Education (DISE) report.

In all, 11,36,625 students joined the first standard in the last academic year. Of them, 5,11,730 opted for private, unaided, English-medium schools. Of the total admissions, 5,87,674 were of boys and among them, 2,89,226 joined private schools.

Of the 5,48,951 girls students, 2,22,504 joined private schools, the report stated. Speaking to DC, an officer from the Department of Public Instruction said that this survey report indicated that an increasing number of students are joining private, unaided schools.
