Hyderabad: The Insurance Regulatory & Development Authority of India has invited striking truck drivers and owners for talks on Monday.

Following the invite, truckers postponed a decision on withdrawing exempted services such as transportation of vegetables and other essential commodities, from the strike. Meanwhile, agitating lorry drivers were arrested on day four of the strike across the state.

Violence was witnessed at a few places and there was also a case of attempted suicide by an on-duty trucker. In other areas, striking drivers started cooking meals on highways and burned effigies. Cops moved in to make arrests after agitators tried to halt lorry services at Bellampally, Miryalaguda, Karimnagar, Siricilla and other locations.

The President of Telangana State Lorry Owners’ Association, N. Bhaskar Reddy, claimed on Sunday that police at various parts of the state were harassing striking lorry drivers and owners.

“We are condemning the arrests of drivers who were protesting using non-violent methods. The harassment began on Saturday with the arrests of our union leaders, members and supporters at Karimnagar and Sattupally,” he said.
