Chennai Egmore station to get boundary wall

Major repair work to be taken up by railways.

Chennai: In a few months from now, Chennai Egmore station might resemble a fortress as railways plans to take up major repair work as part of its beautification, a senior railway official said. Apart from a boundary wall, the station will see improved parking spaces, new toilets, a lift and an escalator on the suburban station.

According to officials, the historic railway station, which currently lacks a boundary wall, will soon be getting one. “We are facing issues beginning the work for boundary wall as a police booth, and a Tangedco transformer comes within the area decided for the wall. Talks are on with both the parties and work will start soon,” an official said.

The boundary wall is expected to be constructed within three months.
Additionally, there are toilets on platforms 4 and 5; and a new toilet is now coming up on platform 6, the official said.

“Also, there are two escalators on platforms 3, 4, 5 and 6. Now passengers will see a new escalator on platforms 10 and 11, which are for suburban train stoppages. The target date for setting up of this escalator is April 30,” he added.

Officials are focusing on improved landscaping too; new plants will be planted outside the station to give it a greener look. Improved black top parking lots will be provided too. “It’s great news. A lot of people including me will benefit from the new facilities that are being added. Only concern is the regular maintenance of those facilities, which has to be taken care by the Railways,” said Satish Kumar K, a frequent commuter by trains.

“Stations like Egmore and Chennai Central see a huge number of footfalls every day. The parking facilities provided should ensure that people do not use footpaths and roadside for parking, and also that people use public transport more, which can be ensured by keeping parking charges high,” said K.T. Subramanian, former urban engineering professor at Annamalai University.
