Logistics parks to ease city traffic

A senior HMDA official said the city had only one makeshift logistics park at Kukatpally.

Hyderabad: After the Centre approved the Regional Ring Road (RRR), the HMDA has started working on a project to build logistics parks with infrastructure for truckers. It is aimed at preventing heavy vehicles from entering the city.

HMDA has identified 12 locations to set up the parks around the city and selected Deolitte Touche Tohmatsu India LLP as transaction adviser.

The parks will offer integrated facilities for parking trucks and warehousing and will have dhabas, cafeterias and restaurants for drivers, workshops, fuel pumps and weigh bridges etc.

The project would be taken up in public-private partnership (PPP) and the HMDA has set a target to complete at least two logistics parks by March. An HMDA official said 35,000 to 40,000 freight vehicles carry around one lakh tonnes cargo in and out of the city.

Officials said that logistics parks would be a one-stop facility for freight operators, third-party logistics service providers and cargo firms. They would be located close to the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and RRR specially for vehicles coming from other states.

In the first phase, work is being carried out on one park on the Vijayawada highway near Batasingaram and another one at Mangalpally on the Nagarjunasagar highway near ORR-Bengaluru highway junction.

The Batasingaram park missed its December deadline and both of them are to be completed by March. HMDA has initiated the second phase of work where it would construct logistics parks at five locations — Pedda Amberpet, Shamshabad, Shamirpet, Patancheru and Manoharabad.

A senior HMDA official said the city had only one makeshift logistics park at Kukatpally.

The proposed parks would not only relieve traffic congestion in the core city by reducing the number of trucks but also provide employment.

He said once operational, heavy transport vehicles need not come into the city and traders could carry the material to their areas with the help of mini-vehicles.

After finalisation of feasibility reports, the expression of interest-cum-request for proposal would be floated to initiate the bidding process. Deolitte Touche Tohmatsu India LLP would select the partner to take up the project on public private partnership mode with long lease and revenue share model.
