Telangana government to have separate Budget for agriculture

Allocations to farm sector will also increase: KCR

Hyderabad: Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Saturday announced that the Telangana state government will present a separate Budget for the agriculture sector from the next year and increase allocations significantly.

He said the government will set up 2,500 clusters of 5,000 acres each across the state to guide farmers on which crops to sow and to what extent, to make agriculture profitable.

Mr Rao said the government will build meeting points for farmers in each cluster to enable them to hold meetings to take collective decisions on farming.

The CM was speaking at a review meeting on ‘Farmers’ welfare-Agriculture development’ with officials at Pragathi Bhavan.

He said the government will initiate the process to organise farmers from village-level to state-level to take collective decisions on farming so that farmers do not fall prey to brokers while selling their produce.

Mr Rao said the government will organise training programmes to all farmers on modern agriculture practices to achieve higher productivity.

“After formation of Telangana, the state government has laid more emphasis on agriculture and irrigation sectors. We have taken up construction of several mega irrigation projects. We have waived off Rs 17,000 crore crop loan arrears of 35 lakh farmers. We are supplying seeds and fertilisers on time. These measures have yielded results with bumper production achieved this year,” the Chief Minister said.

He said the government has recently brought an ordinance to check sale of spurious seeds and fertilisers incorporating stringent provisions against the guilty and invoking of the PD Act.
