Delay in Godavari canal work makes Pattiseema project redundant

18,000 cusecs of water should have been lifted from the Godavari to the Krishna river through the project.

Vijayawada: Delay in completing the Godavari right canal works has left the much-touted Pattiseema project unusable with over 2.5 lakh cusecs of water being released into the sea in the last two days.

Ideally, 18,000 cusecs of water should have been lifted from the Godavari to the Krishna river through the project.

Canal widening and connecting works on the Tammileru and Ramileru aqueducts are said to be the reasons for the delay. Officials say that another 10 days’ work is needed to complete the works and water to be released. The original deadline for release of water was July 1.

Meanwhile, water level in Godavari river is dipping steadily. About 47,000 cusecs was released from the Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at Dowleswaram into the sea.

Officials say that though the river received inflows following rains in its catchment areas in the last few days, the water level started receding slowly.
