Doctors asked to explain Murukan's death

Health department additional chief secretary has sought an immediate explanation from the doctors, after which departmental action would be initiated.

KOLLAM: The health department has sought an explanation from the doctors of Thiruvananthapuram MCH on the death of Tamil Nadu native Murukan, who died in an ambulance after being denied treatment following an accident in August last year. An expert committee report of the health directorate had said that the doctors at the MCH had refused to attend to the victim citing 'technical reasons.' According to the report, the junior resident doctor along with the duty nurse had examined the victim who was in a critical condition in the ambulance, but was not registered in the hospital records.

The doctors on duty did not take steps to admit Murukan to the hospital and also failed to instruct the staff to issue an OP ticket to him. The duty medical officer on the spot also did not attend to the victim. It was also found that one VVIP ventilator and 16 stand-by ventilators were available in the MCH while Murukan was returned citing non-availability of ventilators on the fateful night. The health department additional chief secretary has sought an immediate explanation from the doctors, after which departmental action would be initiated.

The Kollam district Crime Branch had earlier found negligence by the private hospitals Meditrina, Medicity, and Azeezia in Kollam, and the Thiruvananthapuram MCH in treating the victim. Murukan, 37, of Thuruppu middle street, Thuraikkudi, Radhapuram, Tirunelveli, who was gravely injured in a motorcycle accident at Chathannoor here, died on August 7, 2017 after waiting for eight hours in the ambulance.
