Hyderabad police refer it to legal eagles

Most complaints of slander are against politicians, whose are seen as defamatory by complainants.

Hyderabad: Police says that unless there is a law and order issue or a statement or remark creates enmity between two groups, a case cannot be registered.

Most complaints of slander are against politicians, whose are seen as defamatory by complainants. When such a complaint is lodged, the cops refer it to the legal cell.

In most complaints made by the Advocates’ JAC, the allegations are made against one particular leader or person, citing a speech delivered by the same person at any public or party meeting.

“The police will only proceed when the comments or speeches are cognizable in nature or directly or indirectly affects the peace and harmony or creates differences between two different communities or groups,” a senior police official said.

The JAC in its complaint has alleged that the comments made against the state or the CM, were inciting passions among the people of the two states and also damaging the image of the state and the CM.

“By making a representation against such comments, they are expressing their displeasure, which could be done at a different platform too. Since the complaints are regarding political speeches, these alone cannot be considered to be enough to register a case. If we consider such complaints and register cases, opposite parties can also do the same in their area,” said a senior cop.
