MLCs oppose 'Chintan-Mantan' in House

Congress member V.S. Ugrappa pointed out that House should not set a precedent by conducting such sessions inside the Council hall.

BENGALURU: Members of the ruling and opposition parties successfully stopped Chairman of the Legislative Council D.H. Shankara Murthy, from holding ‘Chintan-Mantan’ session for newly elected legislators inside the Council hall on Monday.

Mr Murthy was forced to call off the scheduled programme following criticism from these members to the proposal to allow non-members to address legislators inside the Council hall. Soon after the Governor’s address, proceedings commenced in the upper House for tabling Mr Vajubhai Vala’s speech copies in the Council, but before adjourning the proceedings, Mr Murthy announced that he had decided to permit ‘Chintan-Mantan’ session for newly elected members in the House at 3 PM, and that former Chairmen of the Council, V.R. Sudharshan and B.L. Shankar, would speak about the rules and proceedings. However, this was objected to by JD (S) floor leader Basavaraj Horatti, who suggested that the programme be shifted to the Conference hall or any other venue in Vidhana Soudha. Even BJP members opposed the Chairman’s decision to hold ‘Chintan-Mantan’ inside the Council hall.
