Srisailam dig yields artifacts

Tunnel spotted; silver anklets, silver coins found.

KURNOOL: Ancient artifacts were unearthed at Srisailam on Wednesday. The treasure was found in the areas surrounding Mallikarjuna Swamy temple where ‘jeernodharana’ works pertaining to the Rudraksha Matam are currently going on.

The workers found a secret tunnel leading to a temple sanctum. The officials of the archaeology department will reach Rudraksha Matam at Srisailam to examine the recovery.

On Wednesday, when the labourers were digging in the area surrounding the Rudraksha Matam, they unearthed some vessels at the main entrance, sources said. After digging for some more time, they came across panchloha coins, silver vessels, bangles and some more articles.

After learning about the incident, temple executive officer Narayan Bharat Gupta visited the place.

When asked about the quantity of ancient treasure that was unearthed, he said that it included two anklets, 26 mugs, some silver coins, small silver vessels, one kumkum box and a small basin vessel.
