Hyderabad: Rapid spread of hyacinth, water shortage and lack of maintenance has put an end to boating facilities at Mir Alam tank, Durgam Cheruvu, Safilguda mini Tank Bund and Public Gardens. The only water body in the city where one can enjoy boating Tank Bund.

Boating at Indira Park and Vengal Rao Park are taken care by the park officials, said Mr Manohar Rao, general manager of the tourism department. He said boating was stopped at Mir Alam tank because of water hyacinth. “It’s the responsibility of GHMC to clean it up. After they clean it, the services will resume.”

He said the boat rides at Public Gardens were halted because of shortage of water. “At Durgam cheruvu the waters is being diverted so we had to stop boating,” he said.

Mr Akram, an activist, said, “If the boating is resumed, people in the Old City can picnic in their area rather than driving all the way to Hussainsagar. The government is not taking action against the lake encroachers and they are also not focusing on the development of lakes.”

Mr Jackson, a resident of Krupa Complex, Safil-guda, said, “Boating was an instant hit with the locales of Malkajgiri and many people enjoyed the boat rides. We asked the authorities a couple of times but they cited lack of maintenance and shut boating down completely.”
