CMS driver, helper escape with Rs 90 lakh from cash van in Bengaluru

On Tuesday morning, the police found the abandoned van near Marohalli. The accused had joined the company five months ago.

BENGALURU: A driver and a helper from CMS Company distracted a security guard and escaped with Rs 90 lakh from the money van in Jnanabharathi police limits on Monday evening.

CMS deals with cash transfers to ATMs, and collects cash from malls and supermarkets to be deposited at banks. The accused have been identified as Narayana swamy, 45, who is a resident of Tumakuru and a driver at CMS, and Narasimharaju, 35, a resident of Uttarahalli.

Around 5.30 pm on Monday, the two and security guard Nataraj were assigned to collect cash from different malls and supermarkets in Rajarajeshwarinagar, Vijayanagar and Nagarabhavi. They collected Rs 90 lakh, which was supposed to be deposited in banks.

They were carrying the money in the car when the two accused stopped the vehicle at a shop near Jnanabharati campus and asked Nataraj to get them some bananas and water. The guard returned after a while, but could not find the vehicle. He called the two on their mobile phones but they did not pick up his calls. He immediately informed manager Raghunath, who filed a complaint at the Janabharathi police station.

On Tuesday morning, the police found the abandoned van near Marohalli. The accused had joined the company five months ago.

Narayanaswamy had Rs. 15 lakh debt, while Narasimharaju faced financial difficulties and that could have led to the heist, the police suspected.
