Vijayawada sees dip in overall crime

Despite constraints, police contain crime rate in 2017.

VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada city police did well in controlling crime and maintaining law and order over the past one year despite the many constraints it worked under. The crime rate dipped in the city in 2017 as the public cooperating with the police with timely alerts and the police force itself taking the help of technology to increase efficiency, said commissioner of police Gautam Savang while speaking to the media on Friday.

Mr Savang said that a cybercrime police station will soon come up in Vijayawada city soon. Although the police had to face many difficulties after the formation of a separate state, it successfully arranged the security measures for the visit of the President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice-president M. Venkaiah Naidu. The stream of visits by foreign delegates to development conferences for the capital city Amaravati were also handled well, he said.

The Vijayawada police had to face serious challenges in controlling the traffic during the VIP visits in the city. Among other laurels, the Mahila Mitra, Vruddha Mitra, BalaMitra programmes undertaken by the city police also received appreciation from the public. The police commissioner said an awareness drive was conducted among the youth and the public. As many as 1,860 persons caught eve-teasing offences were given counselling, and 2,375 cases gambling cases were registered during the drive.

Police said that although the crime rate had reduced, the city had experienced a rise in cybercrimes. Violent offences reported in 2017 included 33 murder cases, 77 rape cases, 31 kidnappings and four cases of rioting. Police said case of murder and robbery saw an increase from the previous year. In this regard, commissioner Mr Gautam Savang said that two more police stations were needed in the city, one each at Gannavaram and Jakkampudi to curb the incidence of serious crime.

A proposal the additional police stations was sent to the government for, he said. Traffic congestion was heavy during the year, but this would ease after development works are completed, he said. The function was also attended by the Deputy Commissioner of Police and Assistant Commissioner of Police. A total of 33 murder and murder gain cases has been registered in 2017. Even the number of theft cases has come down compared to the previous year.
