Kerala: Special shadow team bursts drug racket

The arrest was made based on a tip-off received by Deputy Commissioner of Police Yatish Chandra.

Kochi: Three persons of a racket indulged in smuggling and sale of ‘Ecstasy’ pills and other drugs to school and college students in the city were arrested on Tuesday. Rony (20), Tharique (20) and Krishnakanth (18), all natives of Netoor, were arrested from the Ernakulam South railway station by the special shadow team formed by the city commissioner to rein in crimes.

“We’ve seized 'Ecstasy' pills — 1.3 grams of methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA) and one stamp of Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) — and some equipment used to take drugs. During interrogation, the accused admitted that their clients include school and college students. We’re probing how the drugs were smuggled in and also about the clients,” sources said. The arrest was made based on a tip-off received by Deputy Commissioner of Police Yatish Chandra.

Meanwhile, City Police Commissioner M.P. Dinesh has appealed to the public to inform the shadow police upon them receiving any information of drug rackets operating in the city. “The information can be handed over to the number ‘9497980430’ or ‘9497914166’. The details of callers will be kept confidential,” he said in a statement. Three migrant labourers from West Bengal were arrested from the Aluva railway station by the Anti-Narcotic Squad while they were attempting to smuggle in drugs including ganja. The accused were identified as Ikbal Hussain (24), Bansu Mandal (25) and Rubel Miya (22), all residents of Moorshidabad district of West Bengal.
