Chennai: Police on Tuesday detained two persons for allegedly assaulting industrialist Varun Manian inside an elevator in his office building in Nandanam.
Manian’s advocate N. Purushotaman said the incident happened around 4 pm when the businessman got into the elevator to reach his office on the 4th floor of the Khivraj building on Anna Salai.
Police sources said that two workers, Balamurugan and Muthukumar, had come for electrical work in the building and had attempted to get into the elevator, which resulted in a scuffle between the businessman and the duo. “The two of them were not aware of who he is,” a police officer said.
The duo had stopped the elevator doors with their legs as it was closing and got inside the lift.
An argument had broken out between Manian and the two after which they attempted to assault him using the screwdriver they were carrying.
In attempting to block them, Manian sustained injuries on his hand, a source close to the businessman said. The duo was subsequently handed over to the Saidapet police who are investigating. The industrialist’s wedding is scheduled next month.
