Hyderabad: Woman held for selling own baby for Rs 10,000

The rescued baby has been admitted to Sishu Vihar for care and protection, said the police.

Hyderabad: Unable to take care of her three-month old son, a 25-year-old woman working as a daily wager at Adibatla sold the infant for Rs 10,000. The police arrested the boy’s mother and also the woman who purchased the baby on Tuesday and produced them before a court for judicial remand.

The rescued baby has been admitted to Sishu Vihar for care and protection, said the police.

Paidala Padma, 25, a resident of Indiranagar huts in Balapur, was a daily wager. Her husband Balaraju left her a few weeks ago and she had also met with a road accident due to which she was unable to go to work regularly and earn sufficient money.

Three months ago, Padma delivered a baby boy. She thought that she could not provide proper food and care for the baby and contacted another woman, Kummari Lakshmamma of Rajiv Gruhakalpa at Balapur, and offered to sell her son. Lakshmamma agreed to purchase the baby for Rs 10,000 and gave an advance of Rs 4500 to Padma on Sunday.

On receiving a tip-off, the Adibatla police went to the house of Lakshmamma and rescued the baby on Tuesday. Based on her confession, the boy’s mother Padma was also arrested under sections 317 of IPC and sections 80 and 81 of the Juvenile Justice Act. Both women were remanded to judicial custody.

Ibrahimpatnam assistant commissioner of police S. Malla Reddy said that parents who could not afford to feed or take care of their children could contact Child Welfare Committee officials and handover the baby to them for protection but should not get involved in the illegal practice of selling babies.
