Chennai: Girl plays with open lift, dies

The victim Pooja Devi had come with her parents Ram Singh and Kalavathi to meet Ram Singh's elder brother Bhagat Singh.

Chennai: In a shocking incident in Chennai, an eight-year-old Nepali girl died after her head was smashed in the sunshade while she was playing with an open lift, near Chintadripet.

The incident took place on the morning of April 23 at the Lakshmi Cottage Industry office that makes wedding cards at Swamy Naicken street. The victim Pooja Devi had come with her parents Ram Singh and Kalavathi to meet Ram Singh's elder brother Bhagat Singh, who is working in the firm.

While Ram Singh and Kalavathi were inside the office with Bhagat Singh, Pooja Devi was playing with the open lift meant for carrying raw materials to the godown on the second floor of the building.

"After going up and down a couple of times in the lift, Pooja Devi sat on one side of the lift and left her legs hanging out. When she operated the lift from the second floor, she slipped and hit the sunshade" the police said.

She was rushed to the Egmore Maternity Hospital but was declared brought dead. Her body was sent to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for post-mortem and handed over to the parents on Tuesday. Police have arrested the firm's owner Sudarshan on negligence charges for operating a lift without any safety precautions and released him on self-bail.
