Hyderabad: Call routers used for illegal activities

The counter intelligence cell will investigate the activities of the suspect and his father, who holds two passports.

Hyderabad: Fahad Ahmed Siddiqui, 30, who was detained with five airguns is suspected to have used his call routing facilities for “highly illegal activities.” The counter intelligence cell will investigate the activities of the suspect and his father, who holds two passports.

Central crime station found that many calls were routed through Bangladesh, Pakistan and China. His facility was also used by people, who wanted to abuse and stalk women. The CCS booked a case against Fahad and his father Waseem Ahmed Siddiqui, 60, under the Arms Act and for cheating. Apart from the four knives, including a combat knife, and five airguns, the police also recovered call routing equipment and over 70 illegally obtained SIM cards from the suspects’ house.

Senior CCS officials said they are investigating why the suspects acquired the sophisticated equipment. “He had five routers connected to the Internet. One can accommodate 15 SIM cards which can be used to make calls anonymously,” said an official from CCS.

While most NRIs and people are now using WhatsApp, Facebook and Skype to talk to families, police wonder what Fahad was using the equipment for. “It could have been for something illegal. We confiscated his mobile phones and laptops to find out his online activities,” said DCP Mohanty.

Cops suspect the equipment was used for illegal things like hawala and for activities that pose a threat to national security. Waseem, who visited Pakistan in 2005, wanted to visit the US also. “He secured two passports and said he got the second one for a US visit. We are probing what his plan was,” said the DCP.
Police is also investigating if the duo used the airguns to shoot wildlife. Cops received information that they regularly practice shooting at a city farmhouse.

ACP Raghuveer said that one of the airguns, a US manufactured one, needs a licence as per the Arms Act. The duo did not have that. The knives recovered from them also were not the usual ones.
