Hyderabad traffic police have shifted focus of their road safety drive from drunken driving to overspeeding.

Hyderabad: After the fatal accident of Andhra minister Konakalla Narayana Rao’s son, Hyderabad traffic police have shifted focus of their road safety drive from drunken driving to overspeeding. The police are now conducting special drives in different parts of the city to curb overspeeding, a major cause of fatal accidents in the city.

Jubilee Hills traffic police conducted such a drive on Tuesday night, booking 12 cases in just three hours from 10 pm to 1 am, snagging eight two-wheeler drivers, three car drivers and a water-tanker driver in the net in the Jubilee Hills area.

The drive against overspeeding was conducted in other parts of the city, too, such as Patny, Mettuguda, Liberty, Jubliee Hills Checkpost, GVK, NTR Bhavan, LB Stadium, Tarnaka, Singareni Colony, Bank Street, Dilsukhnagar and Tank Bund. 237 vehicles were seized on Tuesday night for overspeeding and dangerous driving, among which 210 were two-wheelers, 3 three-wheelers, 22 cars and three other vehicles.

DCP Traffic A.V. Ranganath said, “From now on, anyone who is caught driving above 100 kmph speed will be jailed.” The offenders will be imprisoned and their vehicles seized. They will be released only after two counselling sessions, he added.
