Lorry with 15 tonnes explosives seized in Visakhapatnam

Driver arrested under the Explosives Act and Explosive Substances Act.

Visakhapatnam: A lorry, which was carrying explosive material, was seized by the officials of the Vigilance and Enforcement department, Srikakulam district, led by officer T. Harikrishna, on Saturday morning near Sompuram area under Vepada mandal in Vizianagaram district. The driver of the vehicle was detained and was interrogated. The officials identified that the lorry belonged to Regency Industries Private Ltd, Bommalapuram area under Bhuvanagiri district of Telangana, and heading towards Vyshnavi Enterprises, Vizag city.

During regular vehicle-checking, the officers stopped the vehicle and started searching the goods loaded inside it. Later, the investigators found 15 tonne of explosives in 600 boxes (10 tonnes of VJ Blast 83 mm gelatin sticks and 5 tonnes of Indra Super 25 mm gelatin sticks. The value of the seized explosives would cost over Rs 4.95 lakh.

The lorry driver revealed that the owner of Vyshnavi Enterprises, Vizag, asked him to deliver the explosives at Hanuman Enterprises Godown located at Sompuram area. The officials said that the explosives were being transported illegally from one state to another state as the driver has failed to submit any valid papers. The driver was arrested under the Explosives Act and Explosive Substances Act and seized the lorry and investigation is on to nab few others in connection with the illegal transportation of the explosives. The officials are suspecting that some traders in Vizianagaram and Srikakulam have been supplying the explosives illegally to the units and also red-rebels of the banned CPI (Maoist), who use explosives to perpetrate violence.
