Telangana: Class X student ends life

Her parents cited academic pressure as the reason behind this extreme step.

HYDERABAD: Kotha Sandhya, a Class X student studying at Udaya Memorial High school in Jadcherla, Mahbubnagar committed suicide by hanging herself on Monday morning. Her parents cited academic pressure as the reason behind this extreme step. K. Gopal, Sandhya’s father said, “She was a Class X student and her school was offering extra coaching because of her upcoming exams. Her school timings were from 8 am in the morning till 8.30 pm at night. How can a student bear this amount of stress? Even Sunday was a working day for her.”

Umesh, Sandhya’s relative, says that when they questioned the school after the suicide, the authorities said that no child was forced to stay back for classes. A case has been booked under Sec 174 of CRPC in Mahbubnagar police station. K. Balaraj, the inspector says, “After preliminary investigation, we did not find signs of harassment or humiliation that Sandhya has had to face in school and therefore we are not suspicious of the school authorities. However, we will continue to investigate the same by asking her friends.”
