Hyderabad: Woman kills infant daughter

Husband’s abuse forced her to kill her daughter and attempt suicide.

Hyderabad: Unable to bear the alleged harassment by her husband who suspected infidelity, a 24-year-old woman killed her 13-month-old daughter before attempting suicide at her home in Jeedimetla in the early hours of Tuesday.

She slit the throat of her daughter and also her own throat. She was admitted to a hospital for treatment and is currently stated to be stable, said Jeedimetla police, who registered two cases for investigation.

The couple, Narayana Reddy and Susheela, both natives of Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh married about two years ago. After the wedding, they migrated to the city and were living in a rented house at Shapurnagar under Jeedimetla police station limits. Narayana was working in a fabrication company at Jeedimetla while Susheela was a homemaker and taking care of her 13-month-old daughter Dikshita.

Jeedimetla inspector P. Ramana Reddy said that at around 3.30 am, Narayana noticed that his wife latched the main door from outside and went inside the bathroom in the veranda along with the baby. He immediately alerted the neighbours who rushed to see Susheela with an injury to her throat. The mother-daughter duo was shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment, where the baby was declared brought dead and the woman admitted to Mallareddy Hospital where she underwent surgery and her health is currently said to be stable, said the inspector.

“The couple had some issues for some time. Narayana used to reportedly harass Susheela suspecting her fidelity. Upset with this, she used to stay for a long time in her parents’ house at Prakasam district. Susheela came back to the city about five days ago. She gave a statement that she was unable to bear the harassment of her husband and wanted to end her life and that of the child,” said inspector Reddy.

Police registered a case against Susheela on the charges of murder while her husband has been booked for domestic violence. The body of the baby was handed over to her father after autopsy at the Gandhi Hospital mortuary, said police.
