Hyderabad: Drunk driving proves costly for constables

He threw a party for 11 of his friends on Sunday at Maisigandi, known for its Maisamma temple, near Amangal on National Highway 75.

Hyderabad: N. Shivakumar, a 2018 batch constable from Champapet, who died in a car crash on Sunday, had been selected as a sub-inspector in the recent police recruitment test.

He threw a party for 11 of his friends on Sunday at Maisigandi, known for its Maisamma temple, near Amangal on National Highway 75. The group of 12 persons, including Shivakumar and his constable friend K. Vinod Kumar partied till evening and started towards the city in two SUVs when the accident occurred. Kandukur inspector E. Jangaiah. said all of them had consumed alcohol.

“Shivakumar was sitting in the middle of the rear seat. His friends sitting on either side of him got stuck behind the seats and escaped with minor injuries,” he said. The road was re-carpeted about four months ago, but it did not have a median and was poorly lit.

Responding to a query, the inspector said the second group did not turn up at the mortuary fearing that they would be caught. “Many of the them had met each other for the first time at the party. They were all connected through Shivakumar,” Mr Jangaiah said.

Mr Sambali Yadaiah, the owner of the tractor that was involved in the accident, had purchased the vehicle a week ago. Mr Yadaiah, Pethulla in Ibrahimpatnam, threw a party for his relatives and friends at Maisigandi. About 30 people were sitting in the tractor trolley when it was hit by the SUV.

Rachakonda in-charge DCP (traffic) N. Divyacharan Rao said, “There have been recommendations to make changes in the road engineering at the black spots on the highway. We will write again to the officials to take necessary steps.”

He said that enforcement against drunk driving was not conducted on the highway on Sunday night.
