Hyderabad: New strategy to nab drunks

Police to try out new method to catch motorists who have consumed intoxicants.

Hyderabad: The police is fine tuning tactics to catch and punish the maximum possible number of drunk motorists on all days. The north zone traffic police has switched from bandobust method to the shift base technique for this.

The shift base technique will see cops switching routes every hour or 45 minutes. The police learnt this trick from violators. An experiment was done and 36 drunks were caught on a week day.

Speaking to DC, north and west zone assistant commissioner of police (traffic ) Muthyam Reddy said, “The traffic inspector of Marredpally and Gopalapuram tried out the shift base technique on two occasions at Begumpet and Banjara Hills. Normally during every check the team is stationed at one place from 10 pm to 12.30 am and were able to catch and fine around 15-20 violators. But using the new method they caught around 30 in a single drive. They spent 45 minutes at each junction and within three hours the team was able to nab twice the number. The same tactic has been adopted by north zone traffic police too.”

The officer said the maximum number of drunk motorists were caught from the Banjara and Jubilee Hills junctions. The Hyderabad traffic police is now booking more drunk driving cases on side roads instead of main roads. Traffic cops have shifted checkpoints from main roads to internal roads. The reason is that many motorists know regular checking areas. They even guess where the checking will be on Fridays and Saturdays.
