Hyderabad: Four cops attached to commissoner's office

Experts from Gandhi, Osmania hospitals carry out autopsy on Ganesh's body.

Hyderabad: Head constable A. Chennaiah and constables Raju, Nagesh and Yadagiri of Hayathnagar police who escorted alleged custodial death victim Ganesh to Pillayipalli village were attached to commissioner’s office following Friday’s incident. Bhongir ACP S. Mohan Reddy was appointed as the investigation officer.

Senior police officials said that as per National Human Rights Commission guidelines, the autopsy on Akinepalli Ganesh’s body was conducted by a team of forensic experts from Gandhi and Osmania Hospitals in the presence of Choutuppal Sub Divisional Magistrate S. Suraj Kumar and the process was videographed.

Police said that Ganesh, a habitual offender, was booked in around 30 cases of theft and trespassing since 2009. He was also convicted in three cases.On Friday, as Ganesh and his friend Ramesh were moving suspiciously carrying objects used for thefts and a huge quantity of cigarette packs they were detained.

Ganesh claimed that he was a JCB operator and that his vehicle was at a quarry in Pillayipalli village.The cops suspected that he was making baseless statements and to check facts they took him to the village where he made them roam around quarries.

As the cops let down their guard he gave them the slip and jumped into a quarry from a height of 50 feet. Venkat Reddy, a quarry worker, said that he heard a loud cry and the next moment, Ganesh landed beside him unconscious. Ganesh's elder brother Narasimha said that he was away from home for a week and was working along with him. They got information about his death from the police.

Sub divisional magistrate S. Suraj Kumar said the process was videographed and that viscera samples were collected for forensic analysis. Senior police officials said that he managed to escape as he could be familiar with the area. The cops could not chase him as they were not familiar with the area’s terrain.
