Rajahmundry: Joy ride turns fatal for girl student

Two girls injured as moped rams tree.

Rajahmundry: A joy ride on a moped by three girls of intermediate course claimed the life of one while the remaining two suffered grievous injuries at Gokavaram in East Godavari on Saturday. The girls identified as Bhagya Lakshmi, Surekha and Pujitha were studying intermediate second year at government junior college at Gokavaram. During lunch break, the trio borrowed the moped from their common friend to go for a joy ride.

As Bhagya Lakshmi was riding the bike, Surekha sat in the middle while Pujitha driving pillion. They travelled for about one km distance from the college on the moped. While negotiating a steep curve, Bhagya Lakshmi lost her control on the vehicle and rammed a tree on roadside at high speed. Under the impact, Pujitha flung into the air and fell down on the road suffering severe head injury and died on the spot.

Bhagya Lakshmi suffered injuries and went unconscious while Surekha suffered multiple fractures on her two elbows and thigh of one of her legs. Eye witnesses said that the impact of the moped to the trunk of the tree was so intense that the front portion of the moped was totally mangled and the moped got stuck up to the trunk vertically. Police suspect that the rider was probably not very familiar with how to ride the vehicle given the nature of the accident. Local people came to the rescue of the victims and they were shifted to government hospital in Rajahmundry for medical treatment.

The police recorded a statement from Surekha to find out details of the accident. Police booked a case under sections 304 (A), 338 and 337 of IPC and investigation is on. Meanwhile, the family members of the injured girls and their friends rushed to the government hospital to find out their health status.
The health condition of two girls is said to be stable.
