Rs 30.5 lakh smuggled gold seized in Chennai international airport

Chennai: Customs officials at the Chennai international airport here, on Thursday, detected four cases of gold smuggling worth Rs 30.5 lakh.

According to airport sources, officials detained Karthick (45) of Ariyalur, who arrived at the Chennai airport from Bahrain in Gulf airlines, on Thursday morning.

“On suspicion, they searched his baggage but found nothing. On closer scrutiny, they found gold weighing 350 grams stitched to his suit. Officials seized the gold worth Rs 10.5 lakh and detained him.

Likewise, officials searched a passenger named Arokyiam (51), who had arrived at the Chennai Airport from Kuala Lumpur in an Air Asia flight.

“He had concealed the gold pieces in key chains which he brought from Malaysia. The gold was seized and he was taken into custody,” officials said.

In the third case, officials searched a passenger named Praveen (46) of Sivagangai, who arrived at the Chennai international airport on a flight from Dubai on the wee hours of Friday, and found a gold chain weighing 300 grams kept in a sweet box.

In another incident, customs officials stopped Mohammed Hussain (32) and Ashraf (26) of Chennai who arrived at the Chennai international airport to board an Indigo airlines jet, to Colombo.

On searching their baggage, officials found Rs 5 lakh worth Saudi currency Riyal, in a hidden column in their baggage. All the five were detained and a total of Rs 30.5 lakh smuggled gold was seized from them.
