Telangana: Leaking LPG tank burns up car

Expert asks all CNG, LPG-fuelled car owners to check for snags.

Hyderabad: An Indica vista car caught fire in Shadnagar due to a leak in its LPG gas tank. The two persons in the came out on seeing smoke and tried to douse the fire with water. But the fire spread rapidly.

Fire station in-charge G. Anil said, “The fire was so intense that the car was completely gutted. The engine, seats, mirrors and all other components were damaged. The car was handed over to Balanagar police.”

Balanagar inspector said, “The car’s LPG gas cylinder was supplied by a private supplier.”Automobile expert S. Venkat said, “The main cause of fires in gas cars is leakage. If there is gas smell in the car it should be plugged immediately. Even if there is a short circuit or leakages in the battery it can trigger fires. Cars must not be left unattended for a long time.”

He added, “If that happens there are chances of rats entering the car and damaging wires. This can cause short circuits and fires. If precautions are not taken any car, petrol of diesel, can catch fire. The Carbon Monoxide in the air conditioning unit can leak and if it enters the cabin passengers can faint.”
