Bengaluru: Film producer gets six-month prison term for faulty cheque

Bengaluru: A well-known film producer, Jayashree Devi has been sentenced to six months in prison on Wednesday. She was arrested by CHamrajpet police after a warrant was issued by a sessions court. She had been fighting charges of cheating.

S Anand, the owner of Ashwini Pictures and a distributor had filed a complaint against Jayashree regarding a cheque that had bounced. The court remanded her to a jail term of 6 months on Wednesday.

Jayashree Devi has produced many famous movies like Sri Manjunatha, Habba, Mukunda Murari, Sri Renuka Devi, Gadibidi Krishna and has produced more than 20 movies.

Earlier in 2005, Jayashree had taken a loan of Rs. 17,40,000 through demand draft for the production of film Habba and had produced a cheque in due of the loan taken which was later bounced.

Anand approached the magistrate court against Jayashree on charges of cheating. The court adjourned that Jayashree had to repay the principal amount of Rs. 17,40,000 along with the interest which summed up to a total amount Rs. 54 lakh, failing which she were to be convicted to a year. Jayashree appealed the verdict in the sessions court. After the trial, her sentence was reduced to six months.

However, she failed to return the money and had gone into hiding. About two weeks ago, the court had issued an arrest warrant after she failed to appear for a hearing. She was arrested on Wednesday by Chamarajpet police and has been remanded to six months in prison.
