MADURAI: Kausalya, a young widow, whose Dalit husband was hacked to death by caste Hindu groups within few weeks after their marriage near Udumalapet, appealed to the police to act honestly in dealing with inter-caste marriage issues.
“Had the police acted with responsibility when we approached them for protection against my family members, my husband wouldn’t have been killed by the group,” said Kausalya while participating in a state-level public hearing on ‘Honour Killing’ organised by Madurai-based NGO, Evidence, here on Saturday.
When she narrated the background that led to the murder of Sankar, professor R. Murali, one among the jury asked Kausalya to put forth her views to prevent such killing in future.
“My only appeal to the police is to do their duty with sincerity without taking sides when inter-caste couple approach them for help,” said Kausalya. When the jury asked about the court hearing in her case, she charged the state government with not nominating the public prosecutor of her choice.
Instead the government has nominated four public prosecutors who never disclose information about the progress of the case, she pointed out.
