Divorce case: Man attempts suicide over delay in verdict

The journalists called a government ambulance and shifted him to the district hospital.

KALABURAGI: Dejected over a long delay in getting justice in his divorce case in the court, a man tried to commit suicide before the media here on Tuesday.

Sharanabasappa Mane, a resident of Nimbarga village in Aland taluk, was at Patrika Bhavan to tell his story to the media. As he was addressing the media, an emotionally charged Mane suddenly consumed pesticide from a bottle he had kept in his bag. The journalists called a government ambulance and shifted him to the district hospital.

Before consuming pesticide, Mane, who is a father of three children, said that he had applied for divorce and he did not get justice for the last three years despite producing all evidence and records to support his case.

“Our marital relationship is not good, and I decided to go for a divorce, but my wife is against it. I approached the local panchayat, police and even court. Nothing has happened so far. I have lost everything in my battle to be free from her. I am depressed and I don’t have any option but to commit suicide,” he said.

Even as he was being shifted to the ambulance, he showed a file which he said contained evidence to support his case.

Later in the day, SP N. Shashikumar and doctors said that he was out of danger.
