Telangana girl ends life due to sexual harassment by student union leader

HYDERABAD: A 22-year-old girl ended her life by suicide in Dandepally, Mancherial district, after allegedly being harassed by the accused, Nalimela Vinay Kumar, who is reportedly the leader of a political party’s student wing.

Police said the girl got engaged to another man after which the accused began pressuring her over the phone to marry him, prompting her to take extreme measure.

The girl had graduated a year before back and was engaged to another man. Unable to take the harassment, she tried to end her life by suicide at her home and died while receiving treatment at Nims.

She was initially treated in a local hospital before being sent to Karimnagar for further treatment. She was later shifted to Nims hospital, where she died on Monday afternoon.

The girl's family told Deccan Chronicle that she got engaged to another man on March 13 and that the wedding was planned for soon. After learning of her engagement with another man, he began harassing her over the phone and using abusive language. Vinay Kumar was charged with sexual harassment as well as abetment to suicide.
