Kozhikode: District anti-narcotic special action force and Kasaba police have arrested Eranhikkal native Yasar, 26, one of the biggest narcotics dealers, in a joint operation.

They seized 15 kg of Ganja from him and collected information regarding his business in other narcotic products.

Based on the direction from the state police chief Loknath Behra on taking strict action against the drug mafias, the district police team was on a vigil to arrest people behind these deals in the district.

A special drive is now on to find out the roots of the drug mafia functioning in various parts of the district.

Anti-narcotics assistant commissioner K.V. Prabhakaran said Mr Yasar is the most prominent link to reach others.

"After the first level of interrogation, it has been understood that the district has several direct and indirect dealers supplying various drugs, especially to colleges and schools," he said.

"These drugs are being brought from states like Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu, and the carriers are mostly Kerala students studying there."

Mr Yasar has been doing his business mainly in Nallalam and Feroke regions, where he distributed one-kg Ganja packets to sub-dealers last week. They arrested him from Palayam on his way back from Tamilnadu with his fresh stock for the week.

City police commissioner A.V. George said the supply of narcotic products in the city is a major issue and hence the department has given priority to eradicate them.

"We need to help our youngsters to get out of this menace," he said. "We'll conduct awareness classes in schools and colleges with the opening of the new academic year."
