Troubled by bad health, Hyderabad student hangs himself

An engineering student and an Inter-mediate student committed suicide by hanging themselves in the city on Friday.

Hyderabad: Depressed by his health condition and academic performance, a final year degree student from Nizam College allegedly committed suicide on Thursday. According to the police, G. Vivekananda, 22, from Nalgonda district who wanted to crack the civil services, hanged himself with a bed-sheet in his hostel. He left behind a suicide note stating: “I don't understand what I am going through and I am ending my life. Nobody is responsible for my death.”

Vivekananda’s family members said that though he was good in academics, he had been suffering from psychological issues for years and had even been treated for it. “I treated him like a friend and gave him freedom to chose anything,” said his father G Srinivas Rao. Vivekananda was earlier staying at a rented room along with his friends in Domalguda area. A few days ago, he had shifted to a private hostel in Ashoknagar, citing coaching for Civils and Staff Selection Commission as the reasons.

Because of his psychological problems, his parents had wanted him to continue living with his friends, but he was not willing to stay there any longer. During his graduation, Vivekananda was selected for a one-year fellowship in the US after completion of graduation but could not clear the interview. “One of his professors encouraged him and referred him for the fellowship, but due to his psychological issues, he could not clear the interview,” said his father.

“There was no pressure on him. Everything was left to his will and we supported him. We tried to take him to doctors but nothing helped,” he added. When his father could not get him on phone, he asked one of his old roommates, Rahul, to check. Rahul arrived at the hostel on Friday and found Viveka-nanda’s body, said Chikkadpally sub-inspector M. Mallaiah.
