Andhra Pradesh: Lecherous lecturer drives girl to suicide

Badvel police has registered a case, said Mr Partha Sarathi Reddy.

KURNOOL: An 18-year-B.Tech first year student at RGM Engineering College at Panyam, 60 km from district headquarters committed suicide allegedly over harassment by a lecturer.

While some reports attributed the suicide of Usha Rani to ragging, a section of students blamed a college lecturer whose advances allegedly made the girl take her life.

It was said that a lecturer of the college had befriended her roommates and enticed them to take pictures of the student in the privacy of her hostel room. He tried to use those pictures to harass the girl.

Panyam inspector Partha Sarathi Reddy said the student had reportedly consumed hair dye and had developed complications en route to Kadapa, where she was admitted in a hospital, and died.

The inspector said that the student was on vacation since November 3. She came to college on Thursday along with her father. While her father B. Jayaram Reddy was waiting on the campus, she went to the hostel and took the poison.

While they were later shopping at Nandyal, she started vomiting with convulsions. She was immediately shifted to Kadapa hospital, the police said. Badvel police has registered a case, said Mr Partha Sarathi Reddy. The college management was not available for comment.
