Bengaluru: Court commissioner attacked

Group targets court functionary serving notice on illegal abattoirs.

Bengaluru: A group of miscreants attacked the car of court commissioner appointed by the High Court to inspect illegal slaughterhouses in the city, at Dodda Bettahalli near Yelahanka New Town on Tuesday evening.

The commissioner was on his way to issue notices to the owners of illegal abattoirs in the locality when the angry group attacked his car and a jeep carrying police officials accompanying the commissioner. The commissioner and police officials, however, managed to escape from the spot unhurt.

Following the incident, security in the area was beefed up by Additional Commissioner of Police (East) Seemanth Kumar Singh and the police are looking for those who attacked the court commissioner and the police. The police are examining a video of the attack to identify the miscreants. On October 10, the Karnataka High Court had formed a committee to inspect slaughterhouses that are allegedly operating illegally in Bengaluru and asked the committee to submit a preliminary report by October 21 after inspecting the places. The court’s order had come after two petitions related to illegal cattle transportation and slaughter were filed at the High Court.

Two advocates, H.V. Hareesh and D.P. Prasanna, have been appointed as court commissioners. A 45-year-old woman was allegedly subjected to similar treatment and her car was attacked by a group of miscreants in Talaghattapura on Saturday night. Nandini Neeraj had lodged a complaint with the police about illegal cow slaughter in the area and when she returned to check if the police had taken the action, she was allegedly attacked.

Rumours do rounds
As the news of the attack on court commissioner and police officials at Dodda Bettahalli spread, multiple theories, including communal tension, started to float. When journalists tried to contact the police through their official WhatsApp group, they kept mum, adding to the confusion.
