Death in septic tank: Hotel owner held in Bengaluru

When Ravi did not hear from Ramu despite repeated calls, he too entered the tank and met with the same fate. Both died due to suffocation.

Bengaluru: Four days after the death of two workers while cleaning a clogged septic tank at a hotel in AECS Layout, the owner of the hotel was arrested by the HAL police on Saturday.

Avinash Gupta, the owner of Yumlok hotel, was absconding since February 13, when the incident happened. The manager of the hotel Ayush Gupta and caretaker Venkatesh were arrested on the same day. The police had produced Avinash before a local court, which sent him to judicial custody till February 28.

On February 13, two workers Ramu (25) and Ravi (28) were engaged clean a clogged septic tank at Yumlok hotel. Ramu entered the tank first with the help of a rope, while Ravi stood outside to collect the waste.

Within minutes after Ramu entering the tank, he collapsed inside. When Ravi did not hear from Ramu despite repeated calls, he too entered the tank and met with the same fate. Both died due to suffocation.

Following the incident, the police had arrested Ayush, Venkatesh and two BBMP officials – Devaraj, senior health inspector Devaraj and Kalpana, DHO (Mahadevpura Zone) for causing death due to negligence.

The accused have been booked under Section 9 of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013, section 3(1) (J) of SC, ST Act 3 and section 304 of IPC.
