Two celestial brass idols stolen from temple in Guntur, recovered within hours

VIJAYAWADA: Two celestial brass idols were stolen from a temple in broad daylight at Guntur on Sunday and an alert police arrested the culprit within hours.

Police said the accused came to the Kusma Haranatha temple and stole two brass idols from there. The temple is situated near the Chamber of Commerce building in the busy Jinnah Tower centre in Guntur.

The temple representative found the missing of the two brass celestial idols of Kusuma and Haranath at 10.30 am and called in the police. Guntur urban SP RN Ammi Reddy said the two celestial idols were 30 years old. Police formed three teams led by Guntur east DSP B Seetaramaiah to track the culprit(s).

He said a person was found suspiciously moving around at Kodi Guddu Satram area. Police detained him and found the two brass idols in his possession. The police identified him as Polisetti Durga (21) belonging to 9th lane of Kattavari street in Old Guntur area. He was arrested.

The SP said Durga was a habitual offender and involved in two cases in Guntur police station limits and one in Krishnalanka police station of Vijayawada. The police started an investigation to ascertain the real motto behind the idol theft. He announced rewards to the police staff for their swift action and arrest of the accused.
