Marital discord: BBMP officer hangs herself

A senior police officer said that Dr Ashwini married Dr Rohith about one-and-a-half years ago and they had no children.

Bengaluru: A 32-year-old woman BBMP health officer committed suicide at her house in Nandini Layout on Monday night alleging dowry harassment.

The deceased, Dr Ashwini, hanged herself in the night when other family members were asleep. She was working as the BBMP health officer in Vijayanagar ward.

A senior police officer said that Dr Ashwini married Dr Rohith about one-and-a-half years ago and they had no children. She was unhappy and did not have a good relationship with her husband and in-laws. About six months ago, Dr Rohith had filed for a divorce, he said.

The probe revealed that Dr Ashwini wasn't living with her husband and had returned to her maternal home to stay with her parents. Her parents allegedly told the police that her in-laws demanded dowry and harassed her, and that was the reason she had returned to their house.

On Monday night, she was visibly upset about the ongoing tiff. On Tuesday, her mother went to check on Dr Ashwini and found her hanging around 11.30 am. The police visited the house and recovered a handwritten note in which she has written 'Sorry'.

"We have started the probe and we are questioning the family members. We don't know the exact reason behind her suicide," the officer said.

A case was registered under Section 174 of CrPc at the Nandini Layout police station.
